How discounts, schedules and coupons combine
A sale can pick up money off from more than one place. This is what happens when several fit the same item.
The kinds of discount
Section titled “The kinds of discount”- Discount schedule: a sale set up in the portal that applies on its own. See Create a discount schedule.
- Item discount: a staff member takes money off one item at the POS.
- Sale discount: money off the whole sale at the POS, Percent or Fixed $. See Discount an item or the whole sale.
- Coupon: a code entered under Coupon in the same window. See Create a coupon.
- Loyalty reward: a reward the customer redeems at the POS.
One schedule per item
Section titled “One schedule per item”An item gets one schedule discount; two schedules never add up. A schedule that lists the item beats one that covers its category. Otherwise the newest schedule wins, or, with Use better discount on, the one that leaves the lowest price.
A staff item discount adds to the schedule
Section titled “A staff item discount adds to the schedule”A staff member’s item discount comes off the schedule’s sale price, not the regular price. A $3 item discount on an item on sale for $19.99 makes it $16.99.
Sale discounts, coupons and loyalty rewards share one slot
Section titled “Sale discounts, coupons and loyalty rewards share one slot”A sale holds one of these at a time: a sale discount, a coupon, or a loyalty percent reward. To use another, take the first one off. While one of them is on, the POS leaves the staff item discounts off.
How the slot meets a schedule discount is your store’s Receipt discount mode (the store editor’s Receipt Info tab):
- Ignore: receipt discount replaces product discounts. This is what you get if nobody has set it.
- Max: the larger of the two.
- Additive: receipt discount on list price, plus product discount.
- Stack on remaining: receipt % off the price after product discount.
A loyalty percent reward always comes off the price left after a sale or aged discount, unless the mode is Max or Additive.
Coupons have their own rules
Section titled “Coupons have their own rules”Each coupon has three Stacking boxes:
- Combines with schedule discounts (store promos), on to start: the coupon follows the store’s Receipt discount mode. Off: it replaces the schedule discount, like Ignore.
- Combines with a manual receipt discount, off to start. A sale holds one discount at the POS anyway.
- Combines with item discounts / price matches, on to start.
A coupon only touches the items in its scope.
What’s never discounted
Section titled “What’s never discounted”- A product with Discount Exempt ticked (product editor, General tab) gets no schedule, sale discount, coupon or loyalty percent.
- A category with No Discount ticked stops schedules only. Sale discounts and coupons still apply.
Good to know
Section titled “Good to know”- A staff member’s discount limit covers the item and sale discounts they enter at the POS.
- In Ontario, a sale discount or coupon of 100% is refused, and so is one in dollars that’s more than the items it covers.
